Prone To Tears CURATED BY MARISSA GRAZIANO

GROUP EXHIBITION AUGUST 29 - OCTOBER 10, 2020

Press Release

Greene House Gallery is pleased to present Prone To Tears, an exhibition of recent paintings by Rachel Barron, Amelia Carley, Alyssa Klauer, Leeanne Maxey and Mack Sikora curated by Marissa Graziano. The show will run exclusively online August 29 through October 10, 2020. Prone To Tears examines the aesthetics, rituals, objects, and affective states that define the tradition of mourning. Each painting situates its content within the popular context of memorial culture, engaging with historically feminized conventions of grief. Collectively the paintings form a post mortem portrait of gendered tropes.

Focusing on the paintings of five individual artists, Prone To Tears unites the disparate works through their utilization of artifice to describe sentimentality. Through constructed landscapes and still lifes, the work creates a scale charting universally experienced symptoms and symbols of grief. Confronted with false depth or trompe l’oeil application of paint, the work evokes the desire to enter a space that the narrative simultaneously suggests and denies.

Prone To Tears marries the tensions between preciousness and cynicism through the lens of five contemporary female painters. Accessible in an exclusively online format, the work encapsulates the loss of shared experience and the yearning for physical proximity while questioning the assertion of authenticity in its presentation.
