ATOPIA CURATED BY ALEX CASSETTI AND MADELEINE BIALKE OCTOBER 6 — NOVEMBER 16, 2019

PRESS RELEASE

Greene House is proud to announce its inaugural show: ATOPIA, a selection of photographs created by Alex Cassetti and Madeleine Bialke, collaborators and childhood friends. This project began in 2018 as a way to synthesize the language between photography and painting, and took place at My Color Print Lab in New York, NY. The images result from a process of exposing negatives and applied brushstrokes together on paper, with additional materials such as ripped paper, dark room notes, and scraps of written word.

In these photographs, formal visual languages collide with another. Meaning becomes negated or codified. Materiality gives a painted mark its meaning on a canvas, but as an exposure on a piece of paper it reduces to a luminous facsimile, lacking body. The negatives themselves, taken by Cassetti, float in dark space, unmoored from the comfort of being an image in entirety. Imagery, when experienced, evokes a remembered landscape. This work presents the fruitful potential of a photograph beyond pure documentation into the realm of painting and assemblage.

Madeleine Bialke received her MFA from Boston University, and her BFA from SUNY Plattsburgh. Her paintings investigate the American Landscape, subverting formal tropes with a radioactive, hyper-saturated palette. Recent solo shows include Harper's Books in East Hampton, NY, in 2019, and Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Alva, OK in 2018. Selected group shows include at SPRING/BREAK Art Show and Asya Geisberg Gallery in 2019. She has exhibited in New York, NY, Portland, ME, London, UK, and Boston, MA.

Alex Cassetti received his BFA from the School of Visual Arts. His personal work is rooted in street photography, architecture, and fragmented portraiture. Selected group shows include Foley Gallery, Photoville and PULSE Art Fair, in New York, NY, and at Ugly Duck in London, UK. He was a recipient of the Royal College of Art Award through SVA in 2016.
